Scorpa SY250 Ignition Timing

Changing the Ignition Timing on a Scorpa SY250.

The ignition on the SY250 Racing can be changed to give the bike a softer power delivery off the bottom end.

( this usually suits most Clubman and C Grade riders ). It does knock some punch off the top end though. This is the standard setting on UK delivered bikes (muddy, slippery conditions!)

Alternatively you may want to advance the ignition from the softer setting for ultimate performance, and a more lively, snappy response.

It's quite easy with the right tools .

First remove the four bolts holding on the left side cover. Be gentle there is a gasket between the cover and the engine casing.
Put two hi-tensile bolts in the flywheel - these are used to stop the rotation of the flywheel when removing it. ( we put nuts on the bolt shaft so we know the bolt is in far enough! but not far enough to damage the stator plate hidden below the flywheel)
Use a tyre lever/bar to stop the rotation (be careful it does not touch the shaft - damage this and your in trouble!) and a 17mm socket to remove the flywheel retaining nut and spacer.
Here's a couple of pictures of a flywheel puller we made, Yamaha make a specific tool for this job or there are many accessory items available at most Auto shops.
The business side of the tool! (notice nut stops - stops bolts going in too far and damaging stator - MAX 8mm depth.)
Bolt up your puller - the 3 attaching bolts first, then take up the slack on the large centre bolt.
Ok, stop that rotation again and using a good fitting socket turn the bolt inwards. The flywheel will loosen within a few turns ( usually with quite a bang!) Remove flywheel carefully and put it aside - somewhere clean!
Right - This is the business end of the job! Check the timing marks found at 1 o'clock on the plate . (green circle)
This is what the timing should look like if set up to Scorpa Racing Specs. Before doing anything mark the original timing (with a punch/scribe/pen/etc) so you can always go back to it!
Now loosen these two retaining bolts (white arrows). Sometimes they are quite tight - so they may need a bit of gentle persausion - always use the correct shaped and sized driver.
Rotate the plate so the original Yamaha marks line up. (notice the punch and scribe mark to notate the original Scorpa settings) . OK NOW RETIGHTEN THE 2 PLATE RETAINING BOLTS!
Put the Flywheel back on, being careful to line up the Keyway. Then put back the side cover and "Bob's your Uncle " . SMOOTHLY RIDE AWAY!
