YAMAHA TY Condensor

  • Point Gap: 0.012" - 0.016" (Aim for exactly 0.015" for optimal performance).
  • Ignition Timing: 1.6 mm before Top Dead Center (BTDC)

How to Inspect and Adjust

  • Locate the points: They are positioned behind the flywheel magneto cover on the left-hand side of the engine.
  • Clean them: If the surfaces have corrosion, use fine-grit wet/dry sandpaper or a dedicated points file to remove any carbon buildup, then wipe them clean with contact cleaner or electrical spray.
  • Set the gap: Rotate the flywheel until the breaker arm rests on the highest point (the cam lobe). Loosen the securing screw slightly, adjust the points using a flathead screwdriver in the pry notch, and tighten the screw. Verify with a 0.015-inch feeler gauge.
  • Check the condenser: Old condensers often break down when hot. If your bike starts well but drops spark after running for a few minutes, the condenser is likely failing. It is highly recommended to replace both the points and the condenser at the same time.
